Stone paving slabs are often used to provide a very attractive and durable walkway, patio or driveway. As these stones are natural material and quarried they all have their own unique look and texture. Some stone paving slabs are very expensive however the common slabs of slate and granite in Franklin, TN are reasonably priced. Less expensive slabs are sandstone and limestone.

Travertine is ideal for use around a swimming pool as it remains quite cool even under the heat of the mid day sun. Not only do they remain cool, travertine has a surface which is naturally slip resistant when the surface is wet. These slabs can be installed over a sand base which makes it easy to lift in the event there is reason to get under a slab, perhaps a plumbing problem. Travertine is fade resistant and comes in many different colors from red, green to blue.

Granite in Franklin, TN is by far the most durable material and can be polished to a high sheen. Granite is ideal as a surface for a driveway as it can withstand the harshest elements and a great deal of abuse. Granite is also available in many different colors, all depending on where the stone came from in the first place. Granite can be laid over sand or mortar.

Slate is another common material used for slabs. It is extremely durable and ideal for general use outdoors. Slate is naturally non-slip so it too is commonly found around a pool, fountain or other water feature in the garden. It is irregular in shape and is best laid on a bed of sand for patios and walkways and mortar if used for a driveway. The most common colors are gray and green. To prevent fading of the material is recommended that regular coatings of a gloss sealer be applied.

Sandstone is an attractive paving material; it is smooth and has a uniform surface finish. Sandstone is soft therefore easy to cut and shape, an ideal choice for an odd shaped area. Sandstone can be purchased which has been treated with an open flame; this flame gives the stone a pebbled finish. Sandstone colors include red and tan, a very popular variant is blue-gray which is often simply called bluestone.
