What are Dental Implants and How are They Applied?
Dental implants consist of two parts and are applied in two different steps. You will first receive your metal anchor. This surgical steel anchor is implanted down into the jawbone. Once screwed into the bone tissue, it is sutured in place. This will need to be done on each empty socket you have. Once all of the metal anchors are in place, you will be sent home to recuperate and heal from your surgery.
The healing process will take approximately three to four weeks. The dentist will need to be assured you have completely healed so there are no issues with your anchors coming loose or causing damage to your gums. Once the bone tissue has accepted the anchor, it becomes a permanent part of your mouth. When your gums have healed, the dentist will have you come back in to receive your artificial teeth. This process completes your smile and gives you back your confidence.
It is imperative you are careful in taking care of your new teeth. Though they are resilient and strong, they can be damaged. Your dentist will inform you of how to properly care for your teeth, so you do not damage them. If damage does occur, the dentist can remove the damaged tooth and screw a new one on your anchor.
