The Benefits Provided by Central Air Units

by | May 21, 2014 | Air Conditioning

On a hot humid day, the first thing you probably notice when you walk into an office building or store is the cool dry air. That cool dry air is complements of a central air unit.

What Does Air Conditioning Mean?
When you walk into that cool building, what you really feel is the absence of heat. Central air units do not cool the air, they remove the heat. Some may think that’s just semantics, but central air removes heat and moisture from the air, thus leaving what you feel cool and dry. On a hot, humid summer day, there’s nothing better than that!

What’s the Difference?
There is a difference between a window air conditioner used to cool a room and a central air units used to cool entire houses. A central air unit uses two coils. One coil is outside your house. That coil is the condensing coil. There’s also a compressor, fan, refrigeration lines and controls. All of this runs into the evaporator coil inside your home. A window unit uses a fan to blow over the hot coil on the outside portion of the unit and the chilled coil on the inside.

Cooling Your Whole House
This is how a central air unit cools your house, step by step.
* As the furnace fan blows air through the coil, the refrigerant is pumped through the evaporator coil
* The coil then absorbs the heat from the air
* The refrigerant then flows back outside to the condenser coil and that heat is released
* The refrigerant then returns to liquid form as it’s cooled
* A fan blows over that cooled liquid in the coil and cools your home.

Central Air Units in the Summer
Sometimes we take things for granted. On a hot, humid summer day, we expect to feel cool when we walk into a store, office or our home. But without a central air unit, this wouldn’t happen. The humidity we complain about so much wouldn’t be absent in buildings, it would be even worse. One of the biggest benefits of a central air unit is its dehumidifying function. A dry home is a healthy home. Mold and mildew can grow in a “wet” home or office and a central air unit alleviates that concern. So along with making you feel nice and cool, your central air unit is keeping your home or office healthy as well.
