What is it that a florist does?

A florist is an individual who is engaged in decoration through the selection and arranging of flowers. A florist in Charleston WV is mostly involved in the selection and arranging of cut flowers however, the florist can also work with live plants.

A florist has nothing to do with the actually cultivating of the flowers; this part of the chain is left to gardeners who specialize in flower growing on a massive scale. The growers maintain contacts throughout the world with florist wholesalers; the growers harvest the fresh flowers daily and deliver them in bulk. In many cases the flowers are grown in one country and arranged and sold in another.

A florist in Charleston, WV does not have any formal training, most florists that own their own shops started out working alongside seasoned florists, learning flower arranging and all the other little tricks of the trade. Although the educational demands of a florist are not all that important, something that cannot be taught is; an eye for color and the overall aesthetics of the arrangement. To succeed as a florist, the individual has to be good at multi-tasking; the florist may be working all day at making the various arrangements that are needed for a big wedding and at the same time handling the walk in customers.

The florist has one function and that is to arrange flowers. Not everyone needs an arrangement which is specially designed; in many cases a simple pre-made bouquet is sufficient. Most florists carry a stock of pre-arranged bouquets, all done to a standard price. Special arrangements are priced based on the flowers used and the quantity. As florists usually only service a manageable area, many of them are associated nationwide to service the needs of other florists customers elsewhere in the country. In many cases an individual may wish to send a memorial arrangement to the funeral of an acquaintance on the other side of the country, to do this he relies on the local florist.

Although florists use mostly cut flowers, they also include in the finished bouquet ribbons, other foliage and even dried flowers. A florists shop carries a wide variety of vases and baskets for the display of the finished work of art.
