SUVs that come from the factory ready to be taken out of the trails and in the mud are few and far between. Some are sold as trail rated, but this does not always mean much. Usually, these are lifted higher than similar models that are not sold as trail rated. So, what should you do after you pick up a Ford SUV in Bedford Park to get it ready to take out in the woods?
Relocate the Breathers
The breathers on your differentials and transmission allow pressure to escape from them and prevent damage to the housing or gaskets and seals. The reason this is needed is that the heat generated by the motion of the components causes a buildup of pressure. Without some release, it will eventually blow out a gasket or seal and then you will be left with a big oil leak.
Relocating the breathers is an easy job. All you have to do is get some fuel line or flexible plastic hose and a hose clamp. Put the hose over the breather and route the tubing up to a higher point on the vehicle. This will keep water from getting in and contaminating your oil.
Relocate Your Air Intake
Depending on the depth of water and mud you are planning on tackling you may need to install an air box re locator or a snorkel to allow you to get through some deep areas. These usually go through the fender to allow the intake to be placed at the top of the windshield and make sure you are always getting air and not water.
This is important since even just a few tablespoons of water in the engine can hydro-lock it and cause damage to your engine.
These are just a couple of things to keep in mind when you are prepping your SUV for the trails, there are plenty of other things that will need to be addressed, but you should research your vehicle specifically to find out what weak points need to be addressed.
