You might see many types of custom mirrors in Long Island because of the need for individually made mirrors that people require for their homes. Customized picture and mirror frames are usually designed by the customer, who has a very rough—or very clear—idea of what they want. They will then take the designs to the framer and ask if that specific style can be achieved. The framer will look at the design and specifications and ask the customer a series of questions, such as what materials they want the frame made from, dimensions and backing options.
Because mirrors come in various shapes and sizes the weight of the glass could play a huge part in the materials used in the making of the frame. A mirror, measuring twenty inches by sixteen inches, for instance would be far lighter than a mirror measuring forty six inches by thirty six inches because the weight of the glass will differ greatly.
Most common frames are made from wood but it is not unusual to see plaster frames with elaborate molding, finishing in gold leaf or silver leaf. Mirrors are not only used as reflective devices to help us check our hair as we rush out the door, or view ourselves in a new suit we just bought. They are also a great source of natural light reflection into a moderately darker room. Rooms that have mirrors tend to appear brighter because of the natural light that reflects and bounces around from each mirror.
Before Glass
Before the invention of glass mirrors were not something that people ever considered and it is very possible that many people had no idea what their faces looked like. The only way to see one’s own reflection in those days was look into still pool or water or a reflective natural surface such as obsidian. Once people realized that bronze could be polished, they made reflective surfaces for people to use. As early as 500 A.D. the Chinese were making silver-mercury mixes to create mirrors. However, the credit for the discovery of silvered glass, that we now know as a typical mirrored surface, goes to Justus Von Liebig in 1835. His method is the forerunner for what is now the most commonly used mirror creating method.
