Do You Really Need HVAC Repair? Here’s How to Tell

by | Nov 20, 2018 | Heating and Air Conditioning

It can be tempting to reach for the phone every time something seems off about your HVAC system. After all, no one likes to wait around in the heat or the cold for their system to kick back on. However, there are many cases of people calling for professional help, only to have their expert arrive at their home or office and determine that nothing was wrong at all. Here are some things to check before you call for HVAC repair:

Is the Power On?

Many times, homeowners notice that their thermostats seem to be malfunctioning or that their systems aren’t powering on. If this is the case, check your thermostat’s power source first. Check the breaker box, ensure your thermostat is properly connected to the power, and make sure everything is turned on. It’s an easy way to solve a problem that often feels way more complicated than it really is.

Is There Something in the Duct?

When your system is working but you’re not feeling any air flow – or the airflow is decreased – you may have a blockage. Use a flashlight to check ducts; there may be something within reach that needs to be removed from the duct that will allow free flow of air to return.

Is the Filter Fresh?

You wouldn’t believe how many consumers forget to change their indoor air filters in their HVAC system and suffer malfunctions because of it. A quick check of your filter will tell you if that’s the possible cause – and is an easy, inexpensive fix you can do yourself.

When to Call for Help

Sometimes, you just can’t fix things yourself. Likewise, sometimes it’s hard to figure out what’s got your system acting strangely. When in doubt, contact a local HVAC expert. They can help you determine if you’re in need of HVAC repair or just missing something simple. Either way, your system will get back on its feet. Remember, you’re better safe than sorry when it comes to keeping comfortable in your home!
