The Value of Renting Survey Equipment

by | Sep 26, 2017 | Business

Most companies that participate in the construction industry or perform regular land surveys own total stations, 3D scanners, or other equipment that is necessary for proper surveying. However, there are instances in which an individual or a company may need to temporarily use survey equipment. Buying all of the survey equipment necessary for an irregular job can be expensive, costing the individual or company thousands of dollars, and the equipment must also be stored once the job is finished.

Rather than purchasing the necessary survey equipment for an irregular job, consider renting instead. The following are two reasons why survey equipment rental may be more efficient and cost-effective than purchasing.

Storing Survey Equipment Can Be Expensive

Some construction companies are smaller and may only work seasonally. The company still needs survey equipment to measure and plan a project before it begins, but storing the equipment between jobs could be inconvenient or require renting a storage unit. In this case, renting survey equipment could be more cost efficient. Purchasing the equipment and storing it for long intervals may prove to be more expensive rather than renting equipment for a few days at a time.

Damaged Company Equipment

All equipment that is frequently used and transported will eventually need maintenance. However, if there is a deadline for a specific job, equipment maintenance or failure can cost a company time, money, and possibly customers.

Total stations are crucial while surveying a large piece of land. If a total station malfunctions, the entire survey could be halted until it is replaced. Most companies have multiple total stations for this reason, but if a small surveying company can only afford one total station, equipment malfunction could ruin an entire job.

In this case, renting a total station could be faster and less expensive than purchasing a new total station and waiting for delivery.

The Pragmatism of Renting

Survey equipment rental could be helpful in many situations other than the two discussed in this post. Renting survey equipment is pragmatic when buying survey equipment is too expensive or less time efficient. If you’re considering adding another piece of survey equipment to your collection for a project, don’t neglect to research survey equipment rentals as well.
