Winning or losing a criminal case can happen before it ever begins if not skillfully handled. A very important document that was drawn up incorrectly can jeopardize the outcome of something that really matters. Yet many people put more effort into choosing the weekend’s activities than into selecting the right lawyer.
It seems obvious, but search for a lawyer who devotes much of his/her practice to the area of law that’s needed. Whether it’s a criminal case, a business law problem or a family law matter, find someone with substantial experience in that legal area.
There are many sources that will help narrow down the field. Referrals, especially from other lawyers or clients, are valuable. Both the American Bar Association and State Bar Associations have a lot of information on their websites, including lawyer finder services. Legal professional associations for various specialties (such as the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys) can provide names of lawyers in that field. There are also a number of legal referral websites; some offer client reviews.
When a few possible attorneys have been identified, prepare a list of questions to bring to the initial appointment.
* How much experience does he/she have in the area of interest?
* How long should it take to resolve the legal matter?
* When you call with questions, who will you talk to? Will there be regular status updates on the case?
* Clarify billing questions. Will phone calls and e-mails/texts be billable? Will billing be hourly, for a flat fee or on a contingency basis? What expenses will you be responsible for? Will billing be monthly? If a retainer is paid, will it be refunded if the case is not concluded?
