Tips for Decluttering Your Closets

by | Mar 22, 2017 | Clothing

Are your closets overflowing with ‘stuff?’ Do you waste precious minutes of your time each morning trying to find what you need? Are your kids’ closets in the same sort of disarray? Then maybe it’s time to declutter! Find a gymnastics consignment shop for your daughter’s old leotards, donate your clothing to the Salvation Army, or have a yard sale and make some extra money at the same time. The important thing is to make a decision and do something to get some order back in your life. The hardest part is getting started. Here are some tips on how to start – and finish:

*Do one closet at a time: Some are notorious for starting one closet, then moving on to the next without finishing the first. This only creates more chaos. Finish one first, then move on.

*Ask yourself some questions about each piece of clothing: When was the last time you wore it? Does it make you feel good when you put it on? Is it a pain to maintain (dry-clean, iron, etc.) Does it bring back good memories when you wear it?

*Keep supplies close by: Have bins ready and sort as you go. Donation, consignment, yard sale, etc.

*Go for a minimalistic approach: Believe it or not, just a few quality pieces of clothing can be transformed into dozens of different looks. You don’t have to stuff your closets full of things you’ll never likely wear anyway.

*Enlist the help of your kids: Depending on their age, your kids can help; when it comes to cleaning out their closets, have them choose what they want to get rid of and what they want to keep.

There’s no reason to keep that old pair of jeans because it reminds you of how thin you used to be in high school; or all those gymnastics leotards of your Olympic dream days. Go ahead, clean those closets, contact your local Salvation army and find that gymnastics consignment shop offering great deals on leotards.
